Records fall like dominos

On Saturday afternoon at the Heinz Invitational, the Joseph High girls competed mostly in the field, but out of the small number of events, the Lady Eagles made several strong placings in the 21-school meet.

In the javelin, junior Megan Yost threw 108 feet for third place, and sophomore Paige Bailey was seventh. Class 4A Baker’s Laura Heigerson won the javelin with 129 feet and her teammate, Katy Sullivan threw just under 117 for second place.

Yost also took fifth place in the high jump, and Bailey was third in the pole vault.

Sophomore BoDean Warnock made a triple jump of 29 feet, 4 inches for eighth place, and sophomore Olivia Williams set a new personal record in the discus, throwing it 61 feet. Williams’ distance was almost 10 feet further than her previous best, 54 feet, 8 inches, which she had set a week earlier at the Pepsi Invite.

While Williams threw her best-ever discus in girls’ competition, it carried over to the boys. Joseph junior Devin Patton made his own high with 123 feet, 8 inches and took eighth place. At each of the last four meets, Patton threw the discus farther and farther.

Some other Joseph boys set personal marks in different events.

Sophomore Kenny Lathrop finished the 800-meter run in 2:12.13, good enough for fifth place out of 29. He was just a second behind John Iverson of Nyssa. Before Saturday, Lathrop’s season best was a 2:14.8 from the Umatilla/Heppner Invitational at the start of April. Saturday’s time was not only a new season’s best, it topped his freshman high of 2:13.

In the shot put, junior Ben Garnett came in fifth place with his best heave ever: 44 feet and 1.5 inches.

The Joseph boys also finished eighth in the long relay. The short relay team was 12th.

Sophomore Anthony Tarango was in the 100-meter sprint and the 200, where he made times of 12.64 seconds and just under 26 seconds.

Sophomore Erik Steen ran the 400 in 56.55 seconds.

This Saturday, the Joseph track and field team will go to Baker City for the Special District 4 meet, which starts at 10 a.m.
