Stockgrowers meeting Aug. 17The annual meeting of the Wallowa County Stockgrowers to be held Saturday, Aug. 17, will start with breafast at the VFW Hall at 7:30 a.m. The cost of the breakfast, prepared by the VFW Auxiliary, is $5 per person.

The business meeting will start at 8 a.m. and include updates from the Oregon Cattlemen Association and the Oregon Beef Council. Tim DelCurto of OSU Extension will speak on feeding fescue hay straw. The morning gathering will end with round table discussion on the proposed buyout of federal permits by the federal government.

The dinner/dance Saturday night event at Cloverleaf Hall begins at 6:30 p.m. with a no-host social hour, followed by a beef and lamb dinner at 7:30 p.m. Cost of the dinner will be $15 per person. After awards are presented, dancing to the music of Oregon?s Hank William Junior will begin.

Wallowa River clean-up plannedAnyone who would like to participate in the second annual Wallowa County River Cleanup is invited to show up at 8:45 a.m. at the day use area of Wallowa Lake State Park. The cleanup is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and will involve the riparian area along the Wallowa River and streams above Wallowa Lake. The cleanup effort is especially needed after the slide that destroyed the Boy Scout dining room July 18 and sent all sorts of debris downstream.

Those who take part are asked to bring water, sunscreen, bug repellent, a hat, proper clothing and a snack. Transportation and a barbecue lunch following the cleanup will be provided.

The cleanup is hosted by Wallowa County Board of Commissioners, Wallowa County Public Works, Wallowa Lake Homeowners Association, Oregon State Parks and the Grande Ronde Model Watershed Program.

Blood drive set WednesayA Red Cross blood drive is scheduled in Wallowa County from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, at Cloverleaf Hall in Enterprise. To make an appointment, call Kannon Miller, 426-6340, or Cindi Aschenbrenner. Refresehments and child care will be provided free of charge.

Nez Perce programs slatedAs part of a series of interpretive programs presented by rangers of the Nez Perce National Historical Park at the Wallowa Nez Perce Homeland Project exhibit in Joseph, Jim Speer will present ?Still They Look Handsome,? the story behind the Spalding-Allen Collection, and ?The Atlatl,? the oldest known man-made weapon, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 17.

Programs will also be presented in Joseph by the park at the same times Wednesday, Aug. 21, by Alyse Cadez. Her presentations, ?And It Is Still That Way? and ?Tools of the Trade,? cover both cultural anthropology and material archeology.

On Aug. 31 Kevin Peters will present ?Native Flutes, the Maker and the Music,? completing the series.

Maryhill Museum offers free admissionMaryhill Museum of Art invites residents of Wallowa, Baker, Umatilla and Union counties to visit free during the weekend of Aug. 17 and 18. Persons who reside in these four counties have only to present their driver?s license to receive complimentary admission.

Maryhill Museum is located near Goldendale, Wash., on the Washington side of the Columbia River gorge.

This is the 10th year the museum has offered this incentive to its neighbors to visit. ?This is a great opportunity to experience the new exhibits on view, and a great time of the year to visit the gorge,? said Colleen Schafroth, museum director.

A special exhibition this year is ?Northwest Visionaries,? featuring paintings by over 60 early Oregon and Washington artists from 1830 to 1940. Many of these paintings have not been shown publicly for decades. The last day of the exhibit is Aug. 25.

Jo-Hi Class of ?72 to meet Aug. 17The Joseph High School Class of 1972 plans to hold its 30 year class reunion on Saturday, August 17, 2002 at 2 p.m. at the Dan and Lynn Stein residence, 62182 Prairie Creek Road in Joseph.

Third Zumwalt Prairie tour scheduledThe Nature Conservancy will be hosting its third public tour of the Zumwalt Prairie Preserve on Saturday, August 17, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The 27,000 acre preserve was purchased by The Nature Conservancy during the fall of 2000. Currently, the local staff is in the process of inventorying some of the important species on the property and learning the history of the area as they work to formulate a management plan for the property. Those wishing to participate in the tour are asked to meet the Conservancy guides at 8 a.m. at the Wallowa Valley Mall in downtown Enterprise with a lunch, water, and good walking shoes. Participants will carpool from the mall and return around 4 p.m.

Enterprise school-wide clean-up setThe Enterprise Chapter of FCCLA is organizing a clean-up day for all Enterprise students, parents, and anyone willing to help on Wednesday, August 21 at 5:00 p.m. Those wishing to help are asked to meet in front of the high school and to bring tools such as rakes, shovels, weedeaters, wheelbarrows, wire brushes, gloves and any other tools that might come in handy. The clean up will be followed by a barbecue around 8:30 p.m. for all who help.
