Rain, rain and more rain has put June within striking distance of a record for the most precipitation for the month in Wallowa County.

As of Tuesday, June 22, the National Weather Service (NWS) monitoring station in Joseph had reported 5.69 inches in June, with over a week to go. The record rainfall for the county in June is 5.76 inches in 1941.

“It’s going to be close,” said Dennis Hull, meteorologist with NWS’s Pendleton Office, about the odds for breaking the 69-year-old record. “We are going into a drying trend.”

However, Hull noted that the current June precipitation is only .08 inch behind the record. “I think your best chance is Wednesday and Thursday (this week),” he said.

The most rain for the month in Joseph, 1.90 inches, fell Sunday, June 20, and was reported on June 21.
