Trophy run

Dawn Mist Movich-Fields rounds a corner during the final 1,000 meters Saturday at Lane College in Eugene.

The Enterprise girls cross country team came out firing on all cylinders Saturday at the 3A/2A/1A state meet in Eugene. When the dust settled, the class 2A Outlaws claimed a third-place team trophy and added two of the meet’s best individual times for good measure.

Enterprise accumulated 97 points, behind second-place Union (83) and state champion St. Mary’s of Medford (67). It was the best girls team finish at state in coach Dan Moody’s more than three decades of guiding the program.

“They really stepped up,” Moody said. “Being third in all those schools is pretty exceptional. I think we have the toughest district in the state.”

Senior Dawn Mist Movich-Fields placed fifth in the individual competition with a time of 19:41, while junior Isabelle Tingelstad (20:10) placed 11th. They were the school’s only individual qualifiers.

“I always count on Dawn and Isabelle doing their thing — always,” Moody said.

The team spent a good portion of the year dealing with injuries and illness but pulled it together in the waning weeks of the season.

“If you’d have told me a few weeks ago that the girls team was headed for state, I’d have thought you were crazy,” Moody said. “I didn’t think we’d ever get caught up.”

Moody said his up-and-coming trio of Karli Bedard, Eliza Irish and Ella Coughlan exceeded his expectations.

“They just came across the line — boom, boom, boom,” he said. “They have to fight through the trenches. They’re the grunt people that really struggle and work.”

The boys team jelled at the end of the year as well and Moody said he hopes both teams make good performance a habit in upcoming seasons.

“Hopefully we can start out next year right where we left off and keep improving,” he said.

The jubilant Moody plans on returning as coach for next season.

“As long as I’m having fun and it’s exciting, I’ll be here,” he said. I really love doing what I’m doing.”
