Responsibility for the Cactus Mountain Fire was transferred from the Northwest Oregon Type 2 Incident Management Team to a local Type 3 team Thursday morning in the fires dying stages.

The fire was reported at 8,350 acres and 90 percent contained Wednesday morning, Sept. 14, in the final daily update put out by the Type 2 management team under incident commander Carl West.

The fire, which started Wednesday, Sept. 7, was burning about 17 miles north/northeast of Imnaha in rugged canyon grassland, mostly in Hells Canyon Wilderness. The cause has still not been determined.

Prior to the management transfer, crews were staggered in and out to aid in a smooth transition. Crews were in the process of removing from the field equipment not deemed necessary.

On Monday resources on the fire peaked with 208 personnel: three crews, eight smoke jumpers, 10 engines, one dozer, one water tender and five helicopters, with access to fix wing aircraft.

Last weekend priority was given to protection of structures at Dug Bar and Cow Creek.

As of Tuesday morning, Sept. 12, the fire was  reported at 7,754 acres and 50 percent contained. While there was no additional fire activity observed on the perimeter, acreage was adjusted upwards Wednesday after flying the perimeter and getting a more accurate measurement.
