Flora School Days returns

FLORA — After taking a year off in 2014, Flora’s annual celebration of pioneer skills, a fund-raiser for the ongoing restoration of the community’s historic school house, returns this Saturday, June 6, starting at 10 a.m. at Flora School.

School Days 2015 begins the run-up to a larger celebration planned for 2016 observing the beloved school building’s 100th year.

School Days, as usual, will showcase the old-time skills of the pioneers. More skills have been added to the demonstrations lineup the past decade, showcasing more of the pioneer activities that are in danger of becoming largely forgotten. Candle making, corn husk dolls, churning butter, grinding corn and flour and many more skills continue to entertain people, along with the Dutch oven lunch and pie social to fill out the day and the stomachs of visitors.

With the sound of the bell, the Dutch oven lunch starts serving. The pie social was a favorite with the pioneers, who found many different reasons for holding these gatherings. Pies at School Days are made by many individuals and businesses, some as distant as Walla Walla, Wash. Tickets for the pie social and the Dutch oven lunch are sold in the Country Store, located in the Flora School gym.

The event, which runs until 4 p.m., also includes local tours and old-time music. In “downtown” Flora, a community yard sale starts at 9 a.m. across from the Grange Hall.
