Dale Marvin Miller

Dale Marvin Miller, 85, of Monmouth, a Wallowa County native, died Sept. 20, 2010. He was born in Enterprise, the third of four sons of Hattie and Grady Miller.
He spent his early years on the ranger station at Imnaha where his father was a forest ranger in the Snake River/Hells Canyon area. As a small boy, he loved swimming, fishing, acting like a cowboy and playing in the river with his brothers.
The family moved to Enterprise in the early 1930s. He graduated from Enterprise High School and attended Washington State University, where he played football as a lineman, until enlisting in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was stationed at several islands in the South Pacific, including Japan. Following the war he worked for the state game commission in Wallowa County, where he met his wife of 62 years, Vera Jean Brooks.
Over the years, they lived throughout Oregon, eventually settling in Monmouth where they resided for more than 45 years.
In 1951, Mr. Miller was called back to duty for the Korean War, and returned to Oregon, continuing employment with the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Department. He retired at the age of 60.
Mr. Miller enjoyed flower gardening, wood crafting, reading historic novels, hunting and fishing. He and his wife liked playing bridge, dancing and traveling.
He was a member of the Monmouth City Planning Commission for two years, and was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge, past master of the Masonic Lodge of Independence, and a member of VFW and of Christs Church in Monmouth.
He was preceded in death by wife Jean, and brothers Alden, Burke, who was killed in WWII, and Wade.
He is survived by daughter Susan of Monmouth; sisters-in-law Virginia Sasser and Nancy Brooks of Portland and Peggy Brooks of La Grande; brother-in-law Ray Guillory of Wallowa; and many nieces, nephews and close family friends.
