JOSEPH It opened in 1998 as Wolfe Fleece, selling handcrafted fleece socks in a tiny rented space inside the building that is now the Josephy Art Center, but in its 15-year history, the small boutique that has occupied a number of Main Street locations has evolved into a full scale clothing and accessories store with a list of loyal clients from all over the world.

In June, Wolfe Fleece & Clothing Company, as it has been known since 2006, underwent what owner Deve Wolfe hopes will be its final name change. The store is now called Tempting Teal Boutique, and so far, the response has been enthusiastically positive.

Our initial focus was handcrafted fleece, and the entire business model was based on that, said founder Deve Wolfe, a fifth-generation Wallowa County native whose brother still operates the familys century ranch in Wallowa. But as the market for fleece became more and more saturated, we evolved to include clothing and accessories, and then shoes. Deve says the name change came about due to the confusion of visitors who still think the store is focused on fleece products, or sells rolls of fleece fabric.

We still have the same products, the same brands, just a new name, stresses Deve, who also wants customers to know that their two favorite fleece products their signature socks and the popular line of baby products are still available. Those are still great sellers for us, and we will keep stocking those for our customers.

Deve has built her business by stocking brands that customers recognize and love, from Fox Croft no-wrinkle blouses to Jag and Silver Jeans, to Rocket Dog, Sanuk and Riecker shoes. Living in Wallowa County, we may not have the need to dress up all the time, but women still want to look good, said Deve. We try to help them do that.

Deve said changing the name of her business was a challenge, and it took a long time to settle on a name she and her customers approved. Deve convened with several women who have shopped at the store for years, and they all loved Tempting Teal Boutique. Then a new logo was commissioned by local graphic designer Joan Madsen, and a new sign was ordered from local sign maker Bird Dog Signs . I was able to get all my needs met here in Wallowa County, which as a local business owner, was important to me, said Deve.

Tempting Teal Boutique is located at the same location as the former Wolfe Fleece & Clothing Company, at 12 S. Main Street, across from Mad Mary & Company. It is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Zels Beauty Bar moves

ENTERPRISE A 50-year-old family-owned hair styling business in Enterprise, Zels Beauty Bar, recently moved into a new location along Main Street in Enterprise.

Shala Kassahn, owner of that business since 1999, says the new location, at 108 W. Main, will provide her operation with more visibility to the public something lacking at the previous work site within the cavernous Wallowa County Professional Building, in Enterprise.

The business was launched in 1963 by Kassahns grandmother, Zelda Younce, and is now at its seventh location.

Three stylists, including Kassahn, currently work out of Zels Beauty Bar, with a fourth set to join them in January, says Kassahn.
