OUT OF THE PAST: Enterprise voters pave way for sewer bonds

A shocking tragedy startled Enterprise Wednesday morning. Mrs. Louise P. Hollenback, wife of Ralph B. Hollenback, was killed in the basement of the Hotel Enterprise, operated by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Bauer. She was found lifeless on the wet floor of a cellar room, one hand grasping an electric wire.
Enterprise voted to amend its city charter at Tuesdays election, the county showing 87 yes and 46 no. This permits the city to issue an additional $20,000 of bonds making the total $50,000 for sewers and other public improvements. The next step will be to call in engineers who shall survey the town and report on sewer routes, draining districts, cost, etc.
CHESNIMNUS Florence Applegate is having a house built on her homestead and some fencing done. The women seem more enthusiastic in improving their farms than the bachelors.
GROUSE The public road in this country is almost impassable owing to washing rains during the spring and early summer. There has not been any work done on the road from the state line by way of Grouse in 14 months. In many places there are cutouts hub deep to wagon wheels and causing breakdowns almost daily. Our people have good reason to move to British Columbia.

Acting quickly and enthusiastically last Friday, the American Legion and Legion Auxiliary, the I.O.O.F lodge and the Lions club arranged for a dance Saturday night at the I.O.O.F. hall for the benefit of the officers and men of the Pendleton base who had just completed a week of maneuvers in the Zumwalt area. Saturday afternoon and evening Enterprise streets were filled with soldiers and army vehicles, ranging from midget jeeps to large ten wheel trucks.
Orrin Foster came in this week to pack up his furniture and get it shipped to Bremerton, Wash., where he is employed in the Puget Sound navy yard. Orrin states that he is working as a plumber on the housing projects which are being built for workers in the yards.
WALLOWA A post-nuptial shower was given Tuesday night for Mrs. Norman Werst at the Ralph Silver home. The hostesses were Marget Carlson, Elvira Engledorf, Evalayna Pereira, Pauline Tucker and June Weaver. The new bride received many lovely and useful gifts.
ALDER SLOPE Haying is progressing nicely on the Slope in spite of the labor shortage. Several farmers are exchanging work and some women and children are seen in the field. Jerry Homan from Homan Drugs has been coming out through the day to help his father, Byron Homan, put up hay.

Grand marshal of the Big Parade during Chief Joseph Days Saturday at 10 a.m. will be Mr. L.W. Minor of Wallowa. He was born in 1883 and will celebrate his 80th birthday as he leads the parade. During his younger years Lou was a cowboy of world-wide renown. Among his conquests in the rodeo world were being world champion bronc rider at Pendleton in 1912 and champion bull dogger in Salt Lake in 1913.
The 18th annual Chief Joseph Days celebration will get underway tomorrow (Friday) with three days of thrilling rodeo, exciting parades and a host of other events. The CJD Court is prepared to reign over the festivity this weekend. They are Queen Orla Mae Teel, Imnaha, and Princesses Treva Cowan, Wallowa, and Pam Preece, Enterprise.
The Wallowa Cemetery Maintenance District is well pleased with the new cemetery fence at the cemetery in the lower valley. The cyclone fence material was donated by Mrs. Lillian Hawkins, aunt of Glen and Alvin Hawkins of Wallowa. The Bramlet Memorial Cemetery, as the sign on the gate proudly reveals, was earlier known as the Lower Valley Cemetery. The first grave was recorded in 1878.

With the 43rd annual Chief Joseph Days just a week away, Joseph is getting ready to play host to Wallowa Countys biggest event of the summer. Reigning over the celebration will be the 1988 Court, Queen Chantay Jett and Princesses Jill Bales and Tami Zollman.
Local firefighters, rescue personnel and curious onlookers crowded around Ernie Hall at the Safeway parking lot Friday to watch the fire equipment demonstrate Wallowa Countys new arsenal of Jaws of Life Hurst extrication equipment on three junked autos.
FLORA I saw it grow and I saw it die, and it hurt to see it die, said Myrtle Wulff, going on 80, last weekend about the community of Flora, where shes spent virtually all of her life.
Bounty on Parade is the theme of this years Wallowa County Fair. The flag design was submitted by 4-H member Leah Svendsen, who received $50 as winner of the first-year contest.
