An exciting day in Enterprise more than 20 years ago has been recalled by the return to the city on a visit by L.O. Hoffman. He was a witness to the robbery of the Wallowa National Bank of Oct. 8, 1891, and by a curious coincidence is able to clear up one point that has always been a mystery . How did the robbers get out of the county?
Three carloads of north end hogs, and one of cattle, were shipped to the Portland market from Enterprise last week. Stock comes in an endless string from the rich north end.
Josephs stock show passed off with a hurrah last Friday and Saturday. Friday had been designated as Enterprise day and all the business houses of the county seat closed their doors in the afternoon, so that everyone could go to Joseph.

A fire of unknown origin completely consumed the Ralph Silver home on Diamond Prairie Saturday. Mrs. Silver was out in the barn milking when a neighbor child informed her the house was on fire.
The lack of a full time doctor in Wallowa has been a cause of concern in that vicinity. Dr. S.S. Merrill, who practiced in Wallowa from January 1940 until he entered the army about a year ago, was the last full time doctor.

One of the largest crowds ever to attend the CJD rodeo was present in Joseph for the big three-day event. Ticket chairman Bill DeGrofft estimated that the average daily rodeo attendance was about 3,500, with Saturday being the biggest day. Through the use of highway counters, they estimated the number of people watching the big parade at 12-15,000, a rise of about 50-60 percent over the crowd last year.
Negotiations for the sale of McDaniel Motors Co. were finalized this week, according to an announcement from Lawton McDaniel and Ray Milligan. It will now be known as Milligan Motors Inc.
IMNAHA Almost everyone went out over the weekend to take part in part or all of Chief Joseph Days. We heard lots of comments on the parade, especially concerning the Imnaha River Rats!
A public meeting and a show me trip to vantage points overlooking the proposed enlarged Eagle Cap Wilderness have been scheduled by Save the Minam Inc., it was announced by Howard Fisk of La Grande, president of the organization which seeks federal protection of the Minam River drainage.

As the 43rd Chief Joseph Days approaches, all of Wallowa County jumps into the saddle to ride herd on one of the most entertaining celebrations in the Northwest.
The windshields of two police cars were smashed by watermelon-toting vandals in Wallowa Sunday night or early Monday, causing several hundred dollars worth of damage, according to the Wallowa County Sheriffs Office.
Canine sheepherders will have a chance to show their stuff at the first Sheep Dog Trial of the Wallowa County Fair Aug. 6-7.
Paul Hatch, Grand Marshal of the 1988 Chief Joseph Days Parade, still attends the parade and Sunday rodeos every finals without fail, but he remembers back when he was back in the thick of things when he was president of the Joseph Chamber of Commerce in the 1960s.
