Last Saturday, August 6, Miss Margaret Boyd broke all records for swimming the length of Wallowa lake. Starting from the pier at the head of the lake at 1:40 p.m., she landed at the lower end at 4:15 oclock, making her time two hours and thirty-five minutes for the swim. At no time did she show signs of weakening, keeping up an even pace the whole distance and finishing strong.
Accompanying her on the swim was George Eisman, rowing the boat and Howard Johnson acting as life guard. Owing to the high water the distance covered was greater than usual.
The swim was made with no preliminary announcements. The party slipped away and the feat was accomplished before most of the young ladys friends knew it was contemplated.
This is the fourth time the lake has been crossed by girl swimmers. On August 16, 1925, Miss Helen Carson made the fist attempt, covering the distance in 3 hours 12 minutes.
The next year on Sunday, August 15, Miss Stella Dery and Miss Florence Hurley made the attempt, both finishing in good time. Miss Dery swam it in 2:46 and Miss Hurley in 3:10.
Miss Boyd received her training in swimming at the Wooster College, Wooster, Ohio, where she received a Red Cross medal for life saving. Accompanied by Joel Olmsted, she made the trip across in the boat last year when the swim was made by Miss Dery and Miss Hurley.
