Preparations for commencement at the Enterprise High School are in full swing. Tuesday evening the senior play will be given in the opera house. Wednesday the formal graduating exercises will take place. The gradating class consists of 10 members: Kate Green, Winifred Kay, Clayton Knodell, Charles Litch, Rosalind Marvin, Birdie McCubbin, Ivan Ratcliff, Clifford Smith, Portis Steel and James Weaver.
In a baseball game so exciting that the spectators nearly went wild, Enterprise defeated Joseph on the fair grounds last Sunday, 14-11 At the end of the fifth inning the score was 11-2 in Josephs favor. As Enterprise creeped up, with Bilyeu in the box, Enterprise fans had their turn and a more frantic lot of rooters never was seen on a local diamond.
Twins are becoming popular. A few weeks ago twins were born to Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Mix of Alder Slope. Then twins boys arrived at the home of Dr. and Mrs. C.T. Hockett in Enterprise.
An altar for the new Catholic church in Flora arrived in Enterprise last week. It was stored by Rev. Peter Heuel in the Enterprise Catholic Church where it will be kept until the new structure in Flora is ready to receive it.

Mr. and Mrs. Amos Evans received the tragic news Tuesday from the war department about the death in the European theater of their son, S-Sgt. Rodney (Howard R.) Evans. Rodney was a tank commander and was believed to be in England, at least until quite recently.
Approximately 44 tons of waste paper were salvaged in the quick drive launched last week throughout the county, according to Ruth Hayes, chairman of the drive. Wallowa led the other towns in the county by a large margin, sending in 14.56 tons, as compared with 9.93 tons from Lostine, 9.625 tons from Joseph and 9.61 tons from Enterprise.

ALDER SLOPE Willis Bailey spent Sunday branding and dehorning his cattle and had several of his young friends from town helping him. Many lights are seen in the fields of the Slope now as the farmers run their tractors at night as well as day, doing their farming.

At a hearing the Wallowa County Boundary Board held on a petition seeking annexation of School District 0 to District No. 12, Wallowa, a compromise split the district between Joseph and Wallowa school districts. The split will put the Halls Canyon dam site in Joseph District No. 6 and the Aneroid and proposed ski lift site in the Wallowa district.
Miss Mildred Day, for 40 years a teacher in Wallowa County, will leave her beloved halls of learning and retire from the teaching field this June. Pictured with her above are two of her students, Jerry Homan, local pharmacist, and second grader Kevin Denney.
A reasonably heavy vote is expected at the primary and special elections Friday, in view of the contests for local offices and the vote on a proposal to establish county library services.
IMNAHA Jim Stubblefield and Bob Talbott killed a snake Tuesday as they were taking yearlings up Camp Creek. Then Jim returned to Camp Creek Thursday and, seeing another snake, killed him, and then found himself in the middle of a bunch of sunbathing rattlers. He killed eight and knows of two that got away.

A two-day public awareness campaign spearheaded by local timbermen reached its zenith on a sopping wet Wednesday morning when an estimated 600 people jammed Cloverleaf Hall for a two-hour public meeting. Many of them drove away with yellow ribbons on car and pickup aerials as a show of solidarity with the timber industry which has been leveled in Western Oregon with a halt on old growth timber as the result of the spotted owl.
Tonys Corner Café and Shell station served its last meal and pumped its last tank of gasoline last week. Its no longer feasible to operate (financially), explained Tony Anton, who, with his wife Judi, has owned the business for about eight years.
