JOSEPH — An exhibit showcasing the work of Nez Perce artists opens Saturday, April 26, at the Josephy Center for Arts and Culture in Joseph.

“Bloodlines: Nez Perce Art Exhibit,” will be open Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at 403 N. Main St. Admission is free.

Smoked salmon, prepared by Judy Oatman, will be served during the opening ceremony at noon.

The sharing of food honors Nez Perce (Nimiipuu) values of hospitality, generosity and community connection.

The exhibit will continue through June 6.

It showcases the cultural identity and generational storytelling through the works of Nez Perce artists.

Featured artists include Phillip Cash Cash, Emma Chief, Nakia Cloud, Doug Hyde (special guest), Brian McCormack, Jacy Sohappy, Ellen Taylor, Nizhonia Toledo, John Seven Wilson and Michael Wilson.

The artwork ranges from purely traditional weaving and beading to contemporary paintings and a new bronze from Doug Hyde. Pieces are for sale, with the possibility of a few items that can be taken away on Saturday. Most items will remain part of the show until it ends on June 6.

The official exhibit flyer features ledger art by Nakia Cloud, inspired by a historic entry dated June 20, 1884, from the Territory of Idaho, County of Nez Perce.

“This exhibition is an act of reclamation and visibility,” Stacia Morfin, director of the ‘ITAM’YANÁAWIT Small Business Program, said in a press release. “It affirms that our stories, languages, and connections to place are alive. Bloodlines is more than an art exhibit, it is a platform for representation, where our ties to this land and our history upon it ignite our future within it. It is a space where every piece of art becomes a legacy for those who create, those who support and those who carry forward the power of nimiipuu fine art. Through this work, we honor our ancestors and ensure that intergenerational knowledge continues. It was an honor for our team to walk alongside each artist in bringing their vision to life.”
