ENTERPRISE — A Wallowa County election forum scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 6 will include the two candidates running for the county Board of Commissioners and the three candidates seeking election as the mayor of Enterprise.

The free public forum, which will include comments from other candidates and speakers offering arguments for and against two statewide ballot measures, is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Sunday in Cloverleaf Hall, 600 NW First St. in Enterprise.

Attendees will be able to submit questions on notecards available at the door. A meet-and-greet period will follow the program.

County commissioner candidates Lisa Collier and Devin Patton will speak, as will Enterprise mayoral hopefuls Cody Lathrop, Daniel Sticka and Stirling Webb.

Among candidates for wider office, Cornel West, a presidential candidate, and state treasurer hopeful Mary King will participate on Zoom. Dan Ruby, a Democrat running for the Congressional District 2 seat, will appear in person.

West is professor of philosophy and Christian practice at Union Theological Seminary of New York. King is a Portland economist and union leader backed by the Working Families Party. Ruby, an Ashland resident, is a nonprofit executive director aiming to unseat incumbent Cliff Bentz of Ontario.

Two statewide ballot measures also will be in the spotlight at Sunday’s forum.

Measure 117 asks Oregon voters if they want to move forward with ranked choice voting, in which voters can rank candidates in order of preference rather than just voting for one. Blair Bobier, an attorney who’s a longtime advocate of ranked choice voting, will speak in favor of the measure. Wallowa County Clerk Sandy Lathrop, one of 16 Oregon county clerks who have voiced concern about the measure, will speak against it.

Measure 118 would increase the corporate minimum tax on sales exceeding $25 million by 3% and would distribute the revenue raised among Oregonians who spend more than 200 days a year in the state. Antonio Gisbert from an organization supporting the measure will speak at the forum. An opponent of the measure also will speak.

Diane Daggett of the Rotary Club of Wallowa County, also a Wallowa County Chamber of Commerce board member, will moderate the forum, a county tradition in advance of every election. The forum is co-sponsored by the chamber, Rotary and the Wallowa County Stockgrowers Association as a public service.

Details on all offices and measures in the election can be found in the state voters’ pamphlet mailed to every voting household. Deadline to turn in ballots in the Nov. 5 election is 8 p.m. on Election Day.
