Track: Eagle boys take fourth, girls win eighth at Pepsi meet

UNION — The Joseph track and field team joined a collection of 1A squads and 4A La Grande to compete in the 15th Annual Pepsi Invitational on Saturday, March 23 at the Union athletic complex.

The Joseph boys, scoring 78 points, placed fourth in the team standings behind Imbler, host Union and first-place Cove.

The Eagle boys were led by sophomore Jenning Schiefelbein’s top spot in the 400 meters. Schiefelbein led the group in the race, winning and setting a personal record with a time of 54.32 seconds.

Junior Jett Leavitt made it two wins for the day, winning both the 800- and 1,500-meter races. Leavitt set a new personal best time in the 800 meters, crossing the finish in 2:00.38 and hit a season-best time in the 1,500 meters with a time of 9:15.63. Later in the day, Leavitt teamed with Dylan Rogers, Jayden McNall and Gavin Russell to win the 4-by-100 relay with a time of 48 seconds flat.

Russell also added to his day with the top spot in the javelin event with a throw of 144 feet, 4 inches.

Led by sophomore Emmerson Hook’s top finish in the javelin, the Joseph girls finished the meet eighth in the team standings with 31 points. Hook set a new personal record in winning the event, hitting a distance of 109 feet, 11 inches.

Fellow sophomore Lillian Bostedt placed third in the discus event, setting a new personal record of 81 feet, 11 inches.

Joseph will take some time off for spring break before a trip to Prairie City on Friday, April 5 for the Prairie City Meet. The 10 teams in attendance will start field events at noon.
