Fat stock sale nears another record

ENTERPRISE — A near-record of $433,937 in total sales was brought in during this year’s fat stock sale, the event that concluded 2024’s Wallowa County Fair.
The total was up from the $410,000 in the 2023 sale, but it wasn’t quite the amount brought in during the record-setting 2022 sale of $468,035. And it was considerably more than the $360,345 in 2021’s COVID-plagued year.
A total of 166 animals were sold in the 2024 sale, ranging from market steers, swine, sheep, goats, turkeys and rabbits.
Most of the proceeds go back to the 4-H and FFA youths who raised the livestock; many of the youths squirreled away the proceeds for college funds.
The youths brought home anywhere from $200 for a reserve grand champion 4-H rabbit to a $6,500 grand champion market steer.
Businesses all over Wallowa County — and beyond — bid on and bought the animals. Rather than taking them home or assigning them to a slaughterhouse, most were “turned” — to be resold. There are several butchering services in the county that took possession of those who weren’t turned and offered cut and wrapped meat within days of the sale.
Knowing the fate of their animals, several of the 4-H’ers and FFA youths showed signs of sorrow as they parted with their animals for a final time.
Here’s a list of the participants in the 2024 4-H/FFA fat stock sale, held Saturday, Aug. 10 at the Wallowa County Fair.
Information includes the name of the participant, weight of their animal (where available), the winning bid and the buyer.
