Girls basketball: Eagles travel to Chiloquin for first round

- Basketball is the leading cause of youth sports injuries, according to a new study from Johns Hopkins University.
CHILOQUIN — After a third-place showing at the 1A Old Oregon League tournament, the Joseph girls’ basketball team enters the opening round of the 1A state tournament on the road with a game in Chiloquin on Wednesday, Feb. 21.

Joseph enters the matchup as the tournament’s 22nd seed while Chiloquin hosts as the 11th seed.
Chiloquin finished the season with a 17-3 overall record and was runner-up in the Mountain Valley League after falling to North Lake/Paisley by two points in the final game of the Mountain Valley tournament.
Chiloquin put together an impressive streak of 15 wins during the season, broken by a loss to Bonanza on Feb. 9, again a two-point game.
The Eagles started the Old Oregon League tournament with an impressive 32-29 win over Union before falling to eventual champion Powder Valley, 46-26. Joseph ended the tournament with a 51-37 victory over Nixyaawii for third place, clinching a spot in the state tournament.
If the Eagles are victorious in Chiloquin, Joseph could have the opportunity to avenge the loss to Powder Valley in the tournament’s second round. The bracket has Powder Valley hosting C.S. Lewis Academy, also on Wednesday, with the winner advancing to meet the winner of the Chiloquin-Joseph game.

JOSEPH — The community is invited as the Joseph girls’ basketball team heads out of town for 1A first-round state basketball action.
The Eagles will depart Joseph on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 11 a.m. for the Wednesday matchup versus Chiloquin.
Community members are invited to line the route out of town with signs and noisemakers for the Joseph push toward a state title.
