Joseph girls earn berth in state basketball tournament

- Basketball is the leading cause of youth sports injuries, according to a new study from Johns Hopkins University.
BAKER — The Joseph girls basketball team is headed to the state tournament after beating Nixyaawii on Saturday, Feb. 17 to claim third place in the 1A Old Oregon League tournament.
Joseph defeated the Golden Eagles, 51-37, in a Saturday morning game to earn an automatic qualification to the state tourney. Details of the game were not immediately available.

In Friday’s semifinal game against the Powder Valley Badgers, the Badgers jumped out to a 29-9 lead at the half and cruised to a 46-26 victory over the Eagles.
Joseph struggled offensively throughout the game; the Eagles were unable to score in double figures in any of the four quarters.
Aimee Meyers was the lone Eagle in double digits for the game, finishing with 11 points.
Echo, a 63-30 winner against Nixyaawii in the other semifinal, will play against Powder Valley in the league championship game.
