Wrestling: McDowell leads Outlaws at Muilenburg

LA GRANDE — With a second-place showing in the 215-pound class by Outlaw Gunnar McDowell, the Enterprise boys placed 14th among the 22 teams competing at the Muilenburg wrestling meet, wrapping up action on Saturday, Dec. 9 at La Grande High School.

McDowell picked up four straight wins wrestling at 215 pounds before falling in the championship match to Weiser’s Kaleb Grove by pin at the 3-minute, 38-second mark of the match.

McDowell is now 7-2 early in the season.

Adding to Enterprise’s 97-point total, Cade Cunningham finished his tournament in fourth place at 285 pounds. After winning his first three matches, Cunningham was pinned in the semifinal round, forcing the Enterprise wrestler into the consolation round. Cunningham went 1-1 in the consolation match, falling to Hermiston’s Dominic Echeverria in the battle for third place by pin.

Tegan Evans picked up fifth place at 157 pounds and at 126 pounds, Gunner Sinclair finished sixth.

Enterprise is next in action starting Friday, Dec. 15 at the Elgin Memorial Classic.

Outlaw girls place 18thLA GRANDE — The Enterprise girls wrestling squad placed 18th while taking part in the Safeway Girls Belt Buckle Classic, finishing action on Saturday, Dec. 9 on the campus of Eastern Oregon University.

Sporting a team of two, Talluah April had the best showing, taking a 1-1 record over the two days of action, competing in the 125-pound class.

Kaylee Eaves, wrestling at 115 pounds, finished 0-2.

The Outlaws will have some practice time on the mats as Enterprise will not return to action until Dec. 21, taking part in the Rumble on the River in Boardman.

Joseph wrestlers place 20thCULVER — The Joseph wrestling team finished with a 20th-place showing at the recently completed Culver Invitational, concluding action on Saturday, Dec. 9 at Culver High School.

The team from Illinois Valley grabbed the team title with 217 points, followed by La Pine in second and Mazama taking third. Joseph, with 11 points, tied with Umatilla for 20th.

Wrestling at 132 pounds, Jayden McNall ended the tournament with a 2-2 showing.

Dylan Rogers fared better, finishing 4-2 for the day at 138 pounds.

Austin Schultz dropped both his matches in Culver at 144 pounds.

The Eagles are next in action beginning on Friday, Dec. 15 at the Elgin Memorial Classic, a two-day event.
