Rock bottom wages in western Oregon are $50 a month and board, and in eastern Oregon $60 and board.
W.M. Stevens, government hunter, returned yesterday from Minam, where he was sent to clear the range of predatory animals which were killing lambs. He learned that the depredations were not committed by coyotes, since the lambs were killed just for the pleasure of the thing. Mr. Stevens had to trail the wolves and wait. At length he saw them coming on a trail on the Minam, 10 miles above its junction with the Wallowa, and he shot both wolves dead.
The new soda fountain for Ray Chasteen’s candy kitchen arrived this week and has been set up. It is a large affair, with a 12-foot counter.
A message to every returned soldier, aviator, marine or sailor of Wallowa county, urging them to take part in the parade and review to be held at Enterprise Memorial day, has been issued by the general committee.

April 28, 1949
Bill Ortman Jr., 16, passed away Wednesday after he was crushed under a heavy concrete ground roller at the Enterprise high school athletic field. Bill and 15 or 20 other high school boys under the supervision of Coach Yeager had been working at the athletic field filling in trenches where a new water pipe line had been installed and clearing out a track course around the edge of the field.
Jack Jenkins, superintendent of the Enterprise school, bought a few parachutes from an army supply store. They are of nylon and silk. The Home Ec girls have been busy making blouses, formals, belts, etc. from them. They make up into beautiful garments.
One or more robbers who knew what they wanted and where to get it broke into the City Pharmacy and Jewelry in Wallowa Sunday night and escaped with an estimated $3,000 worth of narcotics, diamonds, watches, cash and checks.

Oregon Game Dept. biologists report that the aerial census in all six big game management units in Wallowa County has been completed. A total of 9,743 elk and 5,208 deer were tallied.
Two Wallowa High School seniors were named to the top academic positions of their graduating class this week when Hans Magden and Kathy Wolfe were announced as the valedictorian and salutatorian of their class.
Burglars entered the Bank of Wallowa County at Joseph some time over the weekend and took an undetermined amount of cash from one of the bank’s vaults. The loss was placed at between $8,000 and $9,000.
The new community fallout shelter plan for Wallowa county indicates that there is public shelter for 1,300 persons and that shelter space for 7,600 persons is needed.

The Wallowa County Museum was broken into and several items were taken this past winter, including a handmade violin, a brass match holder and lighter, a pair of black motorcycling gloves and a small gilt lamb. A new security system has been installed.
Jake Roberts of Joseph High School finished at the top in the 800 meter run in the prestigious 15-team Kiwanis Invitational Track Meet at Hermiston last Saturday.
Joseph High School math students making up the first place small school team in the recent math contest at La Grande were: James Schmeck, Eric Lunde, Heath Curtiss, J.R. Collier, Dan McMillan, Criss Collier, and Kevin Miller. Teachers are Christy Wells and Rhonda Shirley.
Lions Club Smoker judges awarded Enterprise heavyweight Ed Nobles a win in his three-round fight with Jeff Harmon.
