100 YEARS AGO

July 25, 1912

A horse thief hunt that took Wallowa County officers as far as Lewiston, Idaho, and Pomeroy, Wash., last week resulted in the recovery of three stolen horses. The thieves have not been arrested but several men are being watched. The horses, fine big animals, were taken during the night of Monday, July 1, from a bunch turned out by Thomas Bales near his place north of Wallowa.

Peter Baudan (now spelled Beaudoin), the largest land owner in Wallowa County outside the timber companies, has just added the old Elza Makin farm of 721 acres in lower Prairie Creek and 640 acres of state lands to his holdings. This gives him a total of about 12,000 acres in the county.

At the meeting of the Enterprise City Council last Wednesday evening, a petition for vacation of certain streets within the fairgrounds enclosure was presented. IMNAHA Mr. Ludiker started to market this morning with a fine load of apricots. We hope he wont find the market glutted with products from the mail order houses in Chicago when he arrives.

70 YEARS AGO

July 23, 1942

Keith Lutje, Grant Sasser and Lloyd Catoure had a narrow escape from death or serious injury when a car driven by Lloyd plunged off the road into Wallowa County about 1:30 Sunday morning.

A representative group of people from organizations of the town met at Legion Hall last Friday evening, the object being to consider ways of combatting drunkenness among the outgoing draftees, who leave at intervals for the induction centers. While it was generally realized that by far the greatest majority of the boys were of the finest character and the pick of the countys young manhood, it was also realized that there were generally a few who had a tendency to break over and their actions reflected back to the discredit of the whole company who were leaving.

Walter Ashley Carper was laid to rest in the Lostine cemetery Tuesday afternoon after a long and painful illness. He was born May 20, 1875, in West Virginia and came to Oregon while a young man and settled with several brothers and sisters in the north part of Wallowa County in what they termed the Promise Land. He was married to Lula Barton Jan. 11, 1910. Ten of the 11 children born to this union are still living.

Mrs. James Dorrance and daughter Phyllis crossed the Snake River in a row boat and swam two horses last Wednesday to attend a shower at the home of Mrs. Boots Shell at Spring Camp for Mrs. Mark Rorke.

50 YEARS AGO

July 29, 1962

A riot broke out between strikers and workers Monday morning at the picket line of the J. Herbert Bate company mill. As the result of the riot, warrants were issued for the arrest of 25 men. Mr. LeRoy Smith of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service was contacted Tuesday concerning progress in settling the strike. He expected arrangements to be completed soon for a meeting early next week.

Chief Joseph Days will officially get under way tomorrow with the Junior Parade at 1 p.m. The big parade will start Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and in the lead will be Gov. Mark Hatfield, who will serve in the capacity of grand marshal. This year three parachutists will jump into the rodeo arena.

Keith Evans, 28, of Joseph and Bill Harris, 22, of Enterprise miraculously survived a spectacular car wreck at Wallowa Lake shortly after midnight Saturday. The car finally came to rest on the beach by the lake, some 30 feet below the surface of the road.

July 23, 1987

The contract for the construction of the new co-located Forest Service facility has been awarded to Seaside Associates of Joseph, announced Al Defler, Hells Canyon NRA manager and project spokesman.

Let the Wallowa Valley once again hear the sounds of its original people. These were the words of encouragement written by the Umatilla Indians to the Colville and Lapwai reservations, inviting them to enter the traditional dance contest at 1 p.m. Saturday at Joseph High School during Chief Joseph Days weekend. The women of the Umatilla responded with an open invitation to local families to a friendship dinner at noon on Saturday.

The majestic Clydesdales of Cy and Creighton Kooch will be used to celebrate Wallowa Countys centennial and their own century farm during the Chief Joseph Days grand parade. Nine registered black Clydes the most ever in a CJD parade will carry descendants of Wallowa County pioneer David Kooch.

Queen Tanya Pfeaster and Princesses Roberta Garnett and Kim Rudger will reign over this weekends 42nd annual Chief Joseph Days. Dallas Williams, arena director from 1967 to 1977, will be grand marshal.
