Letter: Thank you to ones who speak up

I would like to thank Michael Eng for his efforts to hold our Wallowa County officials accountable. In a recent report by your reporter, Bill Bradshaw, one county commissioner publicly complained that Mr. Eng is one person who brings his concerns to the public’s and commissioners’ in a body of 7,000 citizens. In fact he stated Mr. Eng is the only citizen to do so in 10 years.

Does this mean Mr. Eng is somehow suspect? Does the commissioner not represent Mr. Eng? Has the commissioner surveyed his constituents to see if we are grateful Mr. Eng has used his time to be a concerned citizen? Does the commissioner not consider when he draws his salary that it is his job to represent and respond to his constituents?

A democracy expects all concerns about the legality of actions by our elected bodies to be monitored, and we expect the laws to be followed. I must admit that at 80-plus years I do not have the patience or skills to do this, and I’m so grateful there are citizens like Mr. Eng who do and are willing to tolerate this disrespect for our benefit. I expect my elected representatives to treat all citizens fairly and with respect. Bullying has become a national pastime, and I hope Wallowa County does not devolve into this abhorrent behavior.

Sincerely and respectfully,

Jean Grandi
