WALLOWA — A man injured in an explosion two years ago in Wallowa County is now facing charges related to the incident.
Oregon State Police troopers on Feb. 16 arrested Marshall Grey Cox, 35, of Wallowa, on an outstanding warrant for possession and manufacture of a destructive device, according to court records and information from the Wallowa County Sheriff’s Office.
Both possession and manufacture of a destructive device are felonies. Cox was also charged with an additional count of possession of a restricted weapon by a felon, a misdemeanor.
Cox was arraigned Feb. 18 in Wallowa County Circuit Court before Judge Jared Boyd.
The warrant was issued after Cox called 911 on Jan. 4, 2023, to report “blowing my hand off.”
Wallowa County sheriff’s deputies and the Oregon State Police bomb squad began an investigation and executed a search warrant at Cox’s residence on Whiskey Creek Road in Wallowa. There, police say, they recovered materials used to make a homemade explosive device.
Cox was released from jail after posting a $1,000 cash bond on condition that he check in once a week in person, not possess any ammunition, weapons or firearms, and drive only if properly licensed and insured.
He also is forbidden to possess lead azide or the chemicals to create lead azide. Lead azide is an explosive, inorganic compound that is used in detonators. It is considered more sensitive than nitroglycerine and more effective than mercury fulminate.
Cox is scheduled to appear on April 23 in Wallowa County Circuit Court for a plea hearing.
The investigation was completed by WCSO and OSP with the assistance of Enterprise police.
