From the editor’s desk: Watch our website for our full news report

Kendall Wigen signs a letter agreeing to abide by requirements of a scholarship she is accepting to attend Texas A&M University next fall as part of the university's equestrian team. The signing ceremony took place Nov. 13, 2024, at Enterprise High School.

Let me remind you again about something that’s important for Chieftain subscribers to remember: Even though the printed edition of the East Oregonian you receive each week features the best of the Chieftain’s news coverage, it doesn’t have nearly enough space to include all of our stories.

That’s why for our full news report, you need to keep an eye on our website, wallowa.com. All of our content is posted on the website, and it often appears there well before it appears in print in the East Oregonian.

I try to post fresh content to wallowa.com every day, although on occasion I take a day off. Remember as well that, in most cases, when I post new content to our website, I’ll also send notices about that on our social media accounts on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter).

Here’s a small sample of the stories that are posted on our website now that haven’t yet appeared in the print edition of the East Oregonian:

A senior at Enterprise High School has won a scholarship to compete on Texas A&M’s nationally ranked equestrian team.

The annual Healthy Futures Dinner Auction raised about $142,000 for Wallowa Memorial Hospital and its clinics. The money will go to the hospital’s MRI challenge and to expand its physical therapy department.

On Veterans Day, representatives of organizations that work with veterans participated in a seminar outlining the services they offer. The hope is to make the seminar an annual event to serve veterans in Wallowa County.

And here’s a sneak peek at some of the stories we’re working on:

• Freelance writer Ann Bloom is working on a story about how you can work to reduce hunger in Wallowa County, a timely story as the holidays approach — and also, unfortunately, timely year-round.

• In a related story, reporter Bill Bradshaw will preview the annual Tree of Giving and Elks Christmas Basket projects in Wallowa County.

• Ann also has a story about a breast cancer support group that just wrapped up a successful fundraising auction.

• I’m working on a follow-up story about the controversial proposed county zoning ordinance that would have, among other things, placed requirements on any so-called “formula” business that wanted to locate in the county. The proposal has generated some heat between the Wallowa County commissioners and the county Planning Commission.

Of course, news of interest to Wallowa County residents isn’t just limited to Wallowa County: The other counties of Northeastern Oregon frequently generate interesting stories that resonate in this farthest northeastern corner of the state.

There’s good news about that for Chieftain subscribers: Your subscription to the Chieftain gives you free access to five other websites that cover the region: the East Oregonian, the La Grande Observer, the Hermiston Herald, the Baker City Herald and the Blue Mountain Eagle in John Day.

(One of my favorite current stories from John Day involves the fate of the town’s only stoplight — the only stoplight in Grant County. The stoplight was accidentally knocked out of service during construction work, and now town residents are debating whether they want the stoplight fixed at all. Grant County is a little bit smaller than Wallowa County in terms of population, so it might find that it can do just fine without a stoplight.)

But I digress. Here’s how you can access those other Northeastern Oregon websites:

• Simply register your account on every site you wish to read with the same email address and password you currently use.

• Once you’ve registered, enter your username and password to enjoy the full range of content on that news site.

• You should not have to log in again unless you log out, clear history or experience software updates.

• Save your password when prompted by your browser and if you are inadvertently logged out, your browser can fill in your login and password for you. (Only use this option on your personal digital devices.)
