Wallowa to host annual meat shoot Sunday

WALLOWA — It used to be a turkey shoot, but now it’s more for almost anything else.

That’s what the Wallowa Rod and Gun Club is putting on Sunday, Oct. 27, at its clubhouse outside of Wallowa.

Starting at 9 a.m., shooters will have the chance to win one of 70 prizes in its annual meat shoot. The Gun Club is at 75044 Lower Diamond Lane northwest of Wallowa.

“We don’t call it a turkey shoot anymore because there aren’t any turkeys,” said Randal Johnson, club vice president.

But there’s plenty of other meats — and even cheeses. Johnson said pork loins, bacon and other cuts will be available for the winners.

The annual shoot is done in conjunction with gun clubs from Union and Baker counties. They sometimes attract shooters from Idaho, Washington and other places, he said.

This year, it’s the Wallowa club’s turn to host, Johnson said.

He said each ticket purchased buys a chance to shoot.

Shooters are welcome to bring their own shotgun shells or purchase them at the club. Breakfast and lunch also will be available, as well as games for nonshooters.
