Biz Buzz: New coffee shop offers uncommon atmosphere

ENTERPRISE — There’s nothing common about The Commons coffee shop.

In fact, the newest coffee shop in downtown Enterprise is located inside Blue Mountain Computer at 114 S. River St., across from the Wallowa County Courthouse. And the new coffee shop is giving a caffeinated boost to the long-running computer store.

Josh and Camilla Storlie opened the shop Monday, Sept. 16.

“We thought we could feed off each other,” Camilla said. “If someone’s waiting for a computer or phone item, they could have coffee while waiting. At the same time, if someone wants coffee, they might see they need a phone-charging cord or something else.”

Also, the combination of having a coffee shop in a computer store that features Wifi access is a bonus.

“We’ve sure got the fastest internet here,” she said.

The Commons is run primarily by Camilla, with help from Josh as time allows from his regular job working construction for Donnie Rynearson. Camilla said she and Josh built their home on Hurricane Creek Road. He also built all the finely crafted counters in the shop.

Camilla lived in Wallowa from age 7 to 17, when she moved away. She came back about three years ago with Josh and their three kids, ages 12, 15 and 17. Her parents, Jan and Lorraine Swift, have operated Blue Mountain Computer for about 20 years, she said.

The children are their top priority, as reflected in the hours of The Commons — 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. She wants to be able to be home to send them off to school and home when they return.

“I want to be there while they’re still at home,” she said.

In addition to regular coffee, the shop also offers artisan coffee, tea, smoothies, energy drinks, hot chocolate, a coffee float and Italian affogato.

There’s also light food for breakfast or lunch. The menu includes sando, yogurt parfait, bagels, pastries, ice cream, grilled cheese, wraps, hummus plates, chicken tenders and more.

The Commons is the fulfillment of a long-held dream of the Stories.

“Josh and I have always wanted to run a coffee shop,” Camilla said.

The Storlies considered a couple of the vacant storefronts in downtown Enterprise when planning The Commons. But as they talked it over with her parents, they agreed that setting up shop inside the computer store could work for both businesses.

Then came the question of a name.

“We talked a lot about what we should name it,” she said.

They settled on The Commons because they wanted it to be a place people could go and enjoy the company of others, much like college students do on similarly named areas on campuses.

Just a week into business, Camilla said it’s already going well.

“We’re so grateful for the welcome we’ve received,” she said. “We’re just happy to provide a space for people to gather in common.”
