Volunteers are being sought to help rebuild the boardwalks at the Flora School Education Center on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2024.

FLORA — A project to rebuild the front and south boardwalks on the old Flora School is seeking volunteers to help with the work on Saturday, Aug. 24 at the school.

The project is to go on from 9 a.m to 4 p.m. Workers of all ages and skills are welcome. Lunch will be provided, but potluck dishes are welcome.

Nickie A. Sanchez, sergeant at arms of the Flora School Education Center board, said the project is funded by Oregon Cultural Trust, The Ford Family Foundation, Oregon Community Foundation and many individuals with their donations of time and funding. The anticipated cost of the project is more than $28,000.

Built in 1915, the school was deemed significant for its association with education and the community, and for its architecture. It is a 52-by-80-foot building that, at the time of its 1996 nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, had been vacant since 1977 and then had a weathered condition. It was added to the register in 1997. Since then, work has gone on to restore the building.

The boardwalks were original to the school and torn out in days gone by, Sanchez said. Rebuilding the front and the south boardwalks are part of a wheelchair project, which will allow everyone access to the school.
