Cities gear up for November elections

ENTERPRISE — The cities in Wallowa County are gearing up for the Nov. 5 general election and potential candidates have until late August to file to run for office.
The filing deadlines vary in late August in the four cities with elected officials but must be submitted to Wallowa County Clerk Sandy Lathrop by Aug. 27. Lathrop said the last day to withdraw from the election is Aug. 30.
In Enterprise, SEL 101 forms declaring their intention to run for mayor have been submitted by Cody Lathrop and Stirling Webb, city Administrator Lacey McQuead said Wednesday, July 31. Ashley Sullivan, who was elected in 2020, resigned effective May 13. Council President Jeff Yanke stepped up to fill her role since then. Yanke told McQuead he does not plan to run for mayor, but will run for reelection to his council seat term that expires Dec. 31.
James Dickenson has filed for Council Position No. 4, now held by incumbent Brandon Miller. Miller has not yet filed an SEL 101 to run for reelection. His term expires Dec. 31.
In Joseph, Mayor Lisa Collier is stepping down to run for Todd Nash’s seat on the Wallowa County Board of Commissioners.

Wallowa Mayor Gary Hulse said recently he plans to run for one more term this fall and will likely step down after that. Also open this year are the seats now occupied by Councilors Scott McRae and Stacy James. James was elected by the council in December to fill a vacancy left by the retirement of Oren McCrae.
Lostine City Recorder Toni Clary said the term of Mayor Dusty Tippet and the council terms of Lee Allen and Danny Wallace also are expiring. No one has yet filed to run for office, Clary said Wednesday.
All the mayoral positions are two-year terms and those of the councilors are for four years.
