A saddle bronc rider hangs on July 27, 2024, during the final night of this year's Chief Joseph Days Rodeo in Joseph.

JOSEPH — Once again, a young bull rider who was the only one to last the required eight seconds took home the buckle — and the payout — Saturday, July 27, during the final night of the Chief Joseph Days Rodeo.

Lane Vaughan, 19, from Klamath Falls, scored 86 points on Macza Pro Rodeo’s Wreckonciled for a purse of $10,712, according to prorodeo.com.

Vaughan may have assumed the torch relinquished by 28-year-old Derek Kolbaba, who did not compete at this year’s Chief Joseph Days. Now of Walla Walla, Washington, Kolbaba grew up in Joseph, where he started riding. He took the bull riders’ buckle five times in a row.

Announcer Jody Carper and clown/barrelman Ronald Burton kept the crowd entertained between acts with friendly and amusing banter. A dazzling display of equestrian skill was put on by trick riders Olivia Leininger and Maddie MacDonald.

Bullfighters Chuck Swisher and Nathan Harp kept the bull riders safe, as they have done in recent years.

Winners in the other events, and their payouts, included:

• Bareback riding: Mason Stuller, $2,713.

• Steer wrestling: Jason Thomas, $1,811.

• Team roping: Jason Eiguren and Birch Eiguren, $2,632 each.
