- A crowd gathered May 25, 2024 for a reception and dedication to honor Mary Ann McCrae Burrows, the founder of the Wallowa History Center.
The Wallowa History Center honored its founder, Mary Ann McCrae Burrows, with a reception and dedication of its library on Saturday, May 25 at the center.
Over 80 people attended the event.
Since Burrows founded the History Center more than 25 years ago, it has acquired the U.S. Forest Service Bear Sleds District Compound and is working to restore it, using authentic Depression-era architectural techniques. The compound now holds the center’s library and administrative center and a warehouse that has been converted into an event center. The plan is to salvage additional buildings in the future.
The library consists of historical books and a document collection saving local history and family histories. The entire collection is slated to be digitized for online availability.
The dedication was one of three large events held in Wallowa over the Memorial Day weekend. The community also hosted a pancake breakfast and a gathering of Wallowa High School alumni.
The History Center is at 602 W. First St. in Wallowa.
