Eagles send 14 athletes to state track meet

BAKER CITY — With 14 athletes qualifying for the upcoming state track and field meet, the girls team from Joseph Charter School grabbed third place while the boys were fourth in the team standings at the 1A Special District 4 championship meet Friday, May 10 in Baker City.

The Eagle girls ended the competition with 91.5 points, one-half point behind the Badgers of Powder Valley.

Sophomore Annie Rose Miller won a district title in the pole vault with a jump of 3.2 meters (10 feet, 6 inches). That jump also marked a personal best for Miller.

Miller added to her scheduling at the state meet, qualifying in the 300-meter hurdle event with a time of 48.71 seconds, good for second place.

Miller joined with sophomores Harley Wanner, Opal McDonald and Caleigh Johnson to place second in the 4-by-400 relay with a time of 4 minutes, 17.24 seconds. Johnson also took second in the javelin with a measurement of 32.67 meters (107 feet, 2 inches).

Recording her best leap of her career, junior Basey Dawson grabbed second in the high jump after clearing 1.50 meters (4 feet, 11 inches).

The Eagle 4-by-100 relay team (Miller, Johnson, Addy Page and Hayden Kissinger) also qualified for state.

The Eagle boys placed fourth in the team ranks with 76.67 points.

Distance runner Jett Leavitt picked up dual district titles, winning both the 1,500 and 3,000 meters. Looking ahead to the state meet, the Joseph junior is the favorite in both races as he leads the 1A rankings statewide.

Sophomore Jenning Schiefelbein placed second in the 400 meters after running a personal best time of 52.26 seconds.

Lucas Goodrich finished second on the discus event with a measurement of 39.94 meters (131 feet). Junior Gavin Russell also grabbed second with a javelin throw of 44.83 meters (147 feet, 1 inch).

Jonah Lyman qualified for state in the 1,500-meter and 3,000-meter runs and the 4-by-400 relay. Jayden McNall qualified as a member of the Eagle 4-by-400 relay team, along with Leavitt and Schiefelbein.
