Track: Outlaw girls romp to big win in John Day

JOHN DAY — A day on the track for the Enterprise girls’ track and field team ended with a first-place finish for the Outlaws on Friday, May 3 in John Day for the Grant Union Invitational.

The Outlaw boys came up a few points short of the host Prospectors, taking second in the team standings.

The Outlaw girls finished the day with 207.5 points.

Junior Owyhee Harguess picked up a win in the 400 meters after crossing the line in a season-best time of 58.46 seconds. Freshman Kyra Brown also claimed a title, running a personal-best time of her young career in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 26.30 seconds.

Senior Zoe Hermens was a double winner, taking first in the 100-meter hurdles and in the 300-meter hurdles.

Owyhee Harguess then joined with McKenzie Harguess, Neveah James and Mercy Peters to win the 4-by-100 relay, hitting the tape in 50.79 seconds for the title. The time was a school record. (See sidebar.)

The day continued for Enterprise with wins in the javelin by senior Alex Rowley with a personal-best measurement of 111 feet, 2 inches, a victory by freshman Emily Aase in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 1 inch, a personal best and senior Isabella Brann winning the triple jump with a measurement of 28 feet, 6 inches.

The Grant Union boys edged out Enterprise in the team scores, 146.5 to 132.

Freshman Emrys Hobbs was the top runner in the 200 meters, taking a personal-best time of 23.97 seconds. Hobbs doubled up his day with a win in the long jump after an 18 feet, 3 inch measurement. Sophomore Ezra Storlie picked up a win in the triple jump, seeing a mark of 38 feet, 3 inches.

With the conclusion of the Grant Union Invitational, the regular season is complete for the Outlaws. Enterprise now prepares for the 2A Special District 4 meet to be held on Saturday, May 11 at the track facility at Hermiston High School. The one-day meet begins at 11 a.m. with field events.

The top two placers in each individual and relay event automatically punch their ticket to Hayward Field and the state meet. In addition, four additional spots for the next fastest times/marks from throughout the 2A district meets around the state will also qualify for the state meet.

SCHOOL RECORD

JOHN DAY — The Enterprise 4-by-100 girls’ relay team not only took first place at the Grant Union Invitational, but put a new time on the school’s record books.

Mercy Peters, Nevaeh James, McKenzie Harguess and Owyhee Harguess crossed the finish line in 50.79 seconds to not only win the race at the meet but also set a Outlaw track and field record.

The previous mark of 50.82 seconds was set in 2019 by Hero Peters, Savannah Vaughn, Ashlyn Gray and Shelby Moncrief.
