ENTERPRISE — On Tuesday, March 12 — the final day to file for the primary election ballot — David Hembd of Enterprise threw his hat into the ring to challenge incumbent county Commissioner Susan Roberts for Position No. 2. Roberts previously was unchallenged.
“My platform is based primarily on concerns of Wallowa County voters: roads, land and heritage,” Hembd said in a press release.
He said he believes the county roads can use improvement.
“Our county road infrastructure is deteriorating,” he said. “Under my leadership, a certified and experienced road manager and crew would rebuild roads to standard specifications. When needed, we could hire local contractors for local construction jobs.”
He also hopes to work with the rest of the Board of Commissioners to improve the county’s natural resources.
“As commissioner, I would encourage improved land management and stewardship to protect the health of our grasslands, forests and water,” he said. “I would promote enhanced oversight of Wallowa Resources, which is partially funded by the county.”
He said he hopes to improve communication with residents to help them get up to speed on local issues.
“I am a third-generation Oregonian. Working in the forest with my grandfather has influenced my valuing the heritage of healthy land management. Several family generations served in the military as well as myself. I have held leadership positions in the Navy as well as the U.S. Forest Service.”
In total, there are seven candidates running for two seats on the Board of Commissioners in the May 21 primary election, according to county Clerk Sandy Lathrop.
Although the deadline to file to appear on the ballot has now passed, candidates still can run as write-ins.
Running for Position No. 1, now held by Todd Nash, are John Amond, David Brandt, Lisa Collier, Angelika Dietrich Garoutte and Devin Patton. Of these candidates, all show Enterprise as their home address except Collier, who lives in Joseph.
Nash is stepping down to run for retiring Sen. Bill Hansell’s seat in the Legislature.
Also on the May primary ballot is Ashley Immoos of Enterprise, running for county assessor. She is unopposed.
