Joseph girls basketball team qualifies for state tourney

- Basketball is the leading cause of youth sports injuries, according to a new study from Johns Hopkins University.
The Joseph Eagles girls basketball team has qualified for the 1A Girls Basketball Championship tournament, and will hit the road for a first-round game against Chiloquin on Wednesday, Feb. 21.
Tipoff between the Eagles (13-13 overall) and the Queens (17-3) is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Joseph is the No. 22 seed in the 32-team 1A state tournament; Chiloquin is the No. 11 seed.
Joseph earned an automatic berth in the state tourney with a 51-37 win over Nixyaawii in the third-place game of the Old Oregon League tournament on Saturday in Baker.
Chiloquin finished second in the Mountain Valley League behind North Lake/Paisley. The Queens’ Wednesday match against Joseph is the team’s first game this season against an Old Oregon League foe.
The winner of the Wednesday game will play next on Feb. 24 against the winner of a game between C.S. Lewis Academy and Powder Valley. The winner of the Feb. 24 game will advance to the tournament quarterfinals on Feb. 29 at Baker High School.
JOSEPH — The community is invited as the Joseph girls’ basketball team heads out of town for 1A first-round state basketball action.
The Eagles will depart Joseph on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 11 a.m. for the Wednesday matchup versus Chiloquin.
Community members are invited to line the route out of town with signs and noisemakers for the Joseph push toward a state title.
