1A girls basketball: Joseph hosts Elgin, Wallowa travels to Nixyaawii as tourney begins

- Basketball is the leading cause of youth sports injuries, according to a new study from Johns Hopkins University.
The Old Oregon League girls teams kick off tournament action on Tuesday, Feb. 13 with the Elgin girls making a trip to Joseph in the opening round and Wallowa traveling to Nixyaawii in Pendleton.
The winner of the Joseph-Elgin game will advance to meet Union on Thursday, Feb. 15.

Elgin finished the regular season with a 9-13 overall record, including a 5-5 1A Old Oregon League record. The team will be attempting to break a three-game losing streak.
The Joseph girls host after finishing 10-12 for the year including a 6-4 league showing.
The Eagle girls split their two final regular-season games, downing Cove while falling to Imbler in the final game of the season on the Joseph home court.
The Elgin and Joseph teams previously met early in the season with the Eagles taking a 46-37 victory on Dec. 12. Game time for this playoff matchup is 4:30 p.m.
The Wallowa girls basketball team travels to Nixyaawii Community School in Pendleton for its opening-round game in the 1A Old Oregon League tournament.
The game is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13.

After winning two of its final three games, the Cougars hit the road with a 14-9 overall mark and are 5-5 in conference play.
Host Nixyaawii is also sporting a 5-5 league record to go with a 8-12 overall record. The Golden Eagles closed out their season on a two-game winning streak, beating both Elgin and Pilot Rock.
This will be the first meeting of the season between Wallowa and Nixyaawii.
The winner will advance to a road game versus Imbler on Thursday, Feb. 15.
