Outlaw girl wrestlers finish sixth at 1A tourney

ELGIN — Girls teams in Oregon’s wrestling world gathered Saturday, Jan. 20 in Elgin to compete in the unofficial 1A state championships with Wallowa County teams present.
The Oregon School Activities Association combines 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A teams at the official state tournament. The Saturday meet in Elgin offered a chance for the smaller schools to hit the mat for bragging rights.

The Outlaw girls of Enterprise finished the meet sixth in the team standings with 23 points while the Eagle girls of Joseph placed ninth with 17 points.
All of Enterprise’s points came from the championship day for Talluah April. Wrestling a perfect 3-0 for the day, April took a major decision over Echo’s Amber George in the first-place match for the title at 120 pounds.
The top finish for Joseph belonged to Gwendalyn Bastedt, with a third-place showing at 140 pounds. After falling in the semifinal round, Bastedt wrestled her way back through the consolation bracket to grab third place. Also for the Eagles, Lachlan Thompson placed fifth wrestling at 100-105 pounds and Sarah Musia finished sixth in the 120-pound class.
Joseph grapplers finish 11thELGIN — The Joseph boys wrestling team finished just outside the top 10 as teams gathered in Elgin for the 1A State Championships on Saturday, Jan. 20.
The sanctioned state championships combine 2A and 1A teams and will be held later this season by the Oregon State School Activities Association.
Joseph placed 11th in the team scores with 27 points. The Eagle team was led by Jayden McNall’s second-place showing in the 132-pound division. After winning his first two matches, McNall was pinned by Pine Eagle’s Conner DelCurto in the championship match at the 4-minute 28-second mark.

At 138 pounds, Dylan Rogers picked up points for Joseph with a third-place finish.
Austin Schultz finished fourth at 138 pounds for the Eagles.
