Wrestling: Outlaw grapplers win Elgin tournament

ELGIN — The bus ride home was a happy one for the Outlaws boys wrestling team as the Enterprise squad grabbed the team title over a number of 3A and 4A teams as the Elgin Memorial Classic finished action on Saturday, Dec. 16 in the Elgin gym.
Enterprise finished the two days with 207 points, well ahead of runner-up La Grande, with 150 points. Idaho’s Weiser Wolverines placed third followed by Nyssa and host Elgin.
With 24 points, Joseph placed 13th among the 18 teams.
Leading the Enterprise point total was Pearce Schnetzky, a champion at 150 pounds. Schnetzky was a perfect 4-0 over the two days, pinning Nyssa’s LeRoy Phillips-Yale in the championship match at the 3 minute, 25 second mark for the title.
Gunnar McDowell also took home an individual title, pinning La Grande’s Dex Dumlap for the title at 215 pounds and finished the tournament 4-0.
The two Outlaws were joined by Cade Cunningham at 285 pounds, with Cunningham having to wrestle the full match in the championship round before taking a 4-2 decision over Nyssa’s Jorge Candelas.
Enterprise also picked up a second-place showing from Tegan Evans, wrestling at 157 pounds and third-place finishes by James Royes, Ashtyn Irwin and Will Ogden.
At 138 pounds, Joseph’s Dylan Rogers placed fourth, the top finish for the Eagles.
The Enterprise boys will join the Outlaw girls on Friday, Dec. 21 in Boardman for the Rumble on the River.
The Joseph team will be off the mats for the holidays, returning Jan. 19 for the Grant Union Tournament.
Outlaw girls tie for seventh
ELGIN — Led by Talluah April’s third-place finish in the 125-pound class, the Enterprise girls wrestling team tied for seventh in the team standings as the Elgin Memorial Classic wrapped up two days of action on Saturday, Dec. 16.
April finished the tournament with a 3-1 record, falling only to Weiser’s Audrey Deleon in the semifinals by pin. In her three victories, April pinned all her opponents.
Kaylee Evans finished her two days with a 1-2 record wrestling at 120 pounds.
Enterprise’s 13 points tied with Imbler. Union placed sixth, with 19 points,
Nyssa, by only a single point, took the team trophy over Weiser, 62-61. Grant Union placed third with Four Rivers and Elgin rounding out the top five.
The Outlaw girls will make one additional appearance before the holiday break, appearing at the Rumble on the River starting Friday, Dec. 21 at Riverside High School in Boardman.
