Letter: Republican Party has lost its way

The Republican National Committee has lost its way!
The new speaker of the House, a hard-line right-winger and a Donald Trump-approved election denier, may be about to change the course of history. This individual has an opportunity to sway the ratification of electors during future elections a la Trump. Since we know this ratification nearly succeeded in overturning the vote of the people during the past election, what is to keep it from succeeding next time?
Since these are the same legislators who refused to vote in favor of paying the nation’s bills, one must question their motives. The funding was only approved with the help of Democrats (the opposing party) and the loss of a speaker’s position, so even that funding is temporary.
The RNC has spawned a new breed of Republicans; the party has no platform, so it has no path forward or published policies. These same legislators (many are election deniers) are promoting positions many voters find objectionable such as anti-abortion measures, with the subsequent closing of women’s health centers, which have been misidentified as pro-life, and no interest in controls overseeing gun ownership even though “mass shootings” are common.
The issues which are unaddressed by the RNC are equally troubling. Where is this party when the legislators have made threats of violence, even among themselves, or approved lower taxes for the rich by defunding social safety-net programs?
The “standard bearer” for the Republican Party refuses to debate with other candidates, where these issues might be aired.
Can the Republican Party really claim to honor the Constitution with a two-party system, or is it pushing for a new government with a king or dictator? For 170 years, this has been the
party of small government. If they succeed with an autocracy this will not be “small government,” this will likely be one party with an autocratic lifetime leader and a high degree of corruption.
These issues cannot be ignored. It is time to recognize and stop this party. Our tool is the people’s vote.
