Outlaw girls win FootRace to Valhalla

UMATILLA — In the final season race before teams head to the 3A/2A/1A Special District 3 meet, the Enterprise/Joseph/Wallowa girls’ cross-country squad grabbed the team title at the FootRace to Valhalla on Friday, Oct. 13 in Umatilla.

Led again by the sophomore contingent of Owyhee Harguess and Abigail Hurley, the Outlaws ended the day with 19 points, outdistancing second-place Union’s 41 points. Elgin placed third.

Harguess and Hurley were the lone runners to cross the finish in under 21 minutes with Hurley recording a 20 minute, 40.7 second race and Harguess picking up the win with a time of 20:29.3. Freshman Kyra Brown picked up seventh with a time of 21:38.9 and sophomore Opal McDonald finished 10th with a time of 22:03.7.

For the boys, Enterprise/Joseph/Wallowa finished 20 points behind champion Union as the Outlaws ended the day with 53 points compared to the Bobcat total of 33 points.

Individually, junior Jett Leavitt and sophomore Jonah Lyman ran second and third behind only Union’s Eli Williams. Leavitt was less than four seconds behind Williams, running a time of 16:28.7 while Lyman picked up a time of 16:41.0 in third place.

The Bobcats picked up four of the top 10 runners in the race.

Enterprise/Joseph/Wallowa will now be at Pendleton Community Park for the district meet on Friday, Oct. 27 with the varsity girls taking the course at 2:30 p.m. and the boys scheduled for a 3:15 p.m. start.

The top two teams in the district will make the trip to the state meet. In addition, four additional teams from around the state will also be chosen to attend the state meet after completion of the district runs.

An individual who’s not a member of the top two teams also can qualify for state by finishing in the top seven at the district meet.
