Cross-country: Union/Cove edges Outlaws in Walla Walla

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Wallowa County cross-country team crossed over the state border of Oregon to Fort Walla Walla in Washington to run against both Oregon and Washington teams at the Hawk Invite on Friday, Sept. 22.
The Outlaw girls downed the Washington squads in the team scoring but found an old Oregon nemesis, Union/Cove, take the team title with Enterprise/Joseph/Wallowa finishing second. The Bobcats’ 54 points edged out the Outlaws’ 59 points with Washington’s Chiawana placing third.

Outlaw sophomore Owyhee Harguess led the Wallowa County team, placing third in the 5,000 meters with a time of 20 minutes, 29 seconds. Fellow sophomore Abigail Hurley also picked up a top 10 placement, finishing eighth with a time of 21:07. Freshman Kyra Brown was one spot away from a top-10 race, crossing the line in 11th with a time of 21:34.
The Outlaw boys ended the day in third in the team points with a score of 95.
Again, Union/Cove grabbed first place after a score of 56 points with College Place separating the two Oregon schools in second place.
Leading the Outlaws in the individual standings was sophomore Jonah Lyman’s time of 16:31, good for second place. Junior Jett Leavitt, six seconds behind at 16:37, picked up fourth place.
