Owyhee Harguess of Enterprise, seen here during the Class 1A track and field championships May 26, 2023, is headed back to Eugene with 13 teammates for another 2A track and field championship on Thursday and Friday, May 16-17. Harguess and the rest of the Outlaw girls team won the 2A Special District 4 team title on May 11 in Hermiston.

EUGENE — Enterprise freshman Owyhee Harguess is a state track champion.

Harguess, who’s been drawing attention this spring with a sensational string of track performances, won the OSAA Class 2A title in the 400-meter dash on Friday, May 26. Her time in the finals: 57.79 seconds.

Her time in the preliminaries was even better — 57.28 seconds.

Her performance caught the eye of Nick Streng, a reporter for The Oregonian/OregonLive, who wrote a short story about Harguess’ victory at Eugene’s Hayward Field.

Streng noted that no other runner in Class 2A has cracked the one-minute barrier in the 400-meter race this spring — and said Harguess’ winning time is competitive with some of the best runners in Oregon’s 6A and 5A classifications.

“It’s pretty crazy and pretty cool,” Harguess told Streng on Friday night after her victory. “It’s a great experience.”

The Chieftain will have more coverage of the state track meet online at wallowa.com, and in Wednesday’s print edition.
