Letter: Democrats do exist in Wallowa County
Published 3:00 am Wednesday, March 22, 2023
We quote from Bill Aney’s excellent column (“Joining Greater Idaho — no, thank you,” Wednesday, March 8), reporting on the folks who are urging a change in Oregon’s borders so we Eastern Oregonians can all live happily ever after in Greater Idaho: “ … they want to create a monolithic bloc of like-minded individuals. They call the entire area ‘Trump-voting’ and solid red. Hooboy.”
This may come as a shock, but there are quite a few Democrats here in Wallowa County, despite Michael Clements’ similar comment in his Wallowa County Voices interview in that same issue: “We’re not Democrats up here.” Aney said it right: hooboy.
Mr. Clements and the Move Oregon’s Borders folks need to get out a little more often. They might even find that we are likable. As Mr. Aney put it: “This characterization of the political and cultural landscape of Eastern Oregon starts us off on the wrong foot; diversity is healthy and should be celebrated, not squelched.”
We celebrate Mr. Clements’ home in Wallowa County, with his wife, five children and several siblings. We love living here, too.
