Letter: Sheriffs should uphold oaths to enforce all laws

Thank you for publishing Roger Hockett’s opinion article on “Guns in America and Originalism.” It is one of the most logical articles that I have seen in the Chieftain on this subject.
His description of gun ownership in present society as “a symbol of angry, resentful manhood” describes the rhetoric seen and heard from the very vocal minority of American citizens.

I have wondered about the sheriffs who say they will not enforce a law that has been voted in by the majority of citizens of Oregon. It seems incongruous for a sheriff, who has taken an oath to carry out the duties of the office (has he not?), to say that he will not enforce the laws. Would not someone of integrity in such a position simply resign, rather than stay and continue to receive a salary for not doing the job?
It would be better if people in law enforcement work would help determine ways to prevent the use of guns to kill people, instead of refusing to help keep people safe.
