The bells are ringing at an Enterprise church again. Well, sort of.

A carillon has been replaced at the Enterprise Community Congregational Church a couple years after the system went down. While reading this may elicit images of bells ringing in a church tower (as it did when I first heard the system was coming back), it is, in the 21st century, an all-digital setup. The bell chimes that will ring at likely noon and 6 p.m. daily are bell recordings that will be projected through a set of speakers on the church roof. Still, the return of the bells has many involved ringing with excitement.

The winter sports season is starting to wind down. District tournaments are coming this week as teams battle for a spot in the state tournament. For many teams, the season will come to an end in the next few days. For others, they will gain an opportunity to play for postseason glory.

A major change will be coming to the Enterprise sports scene. Longtime girls basketball head coach Mike Crawford has announced he will be retiring at the conclusion of this season. He was honored during a halftime ceremony Saturday night for a career that includes 519 wins (and counting) in 33 years, a state championship, several more state placings and numerous lives touched. He is among the best to ever coach girls basketball in the state of Oregon at the high school level. We’ll touch on it this week, but we’ll have more to come in the weeks ahead. From a personal standpoint, I can say in my time with the Chieftain (and previously at The Observer) that Crawford has been one of the best coaches I have had the privilege to work with. He is a class act.
