100 years ago

April 10, 1919

The old county high school building overlooking Enterprise has been sold and will be remodeled into a hospital and sanitarium. The inspiring view of valley and mountains should help nurse the sick back to health.

A further step toward the building of a state highway thru the valley will be taken shortly by the county court. The engineer estimates that the road will cost $485,000. That is for a gravel or crushed rock surface, as nothing else would be considered by the state commission.

Enterprise is to be cleaned up next week under supervision of the young people’s societies of the churches and boy scouts. It is the custom for the city to furnish wagons to haul away the trash without charge, but the rubbish must be gathered at the street or alley.

70 years ago

April 7, 1949

Prospects for shooting another motion picture in Wallowa county were seen in an inquiry made by a representative of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios. The story would involve cattle scenes, Indians and a mountain background.

Final tabulation by the Oregon state game commission of return report cards from deer and elk hunters show an 80 percent return.

The mayor and city council have designated April 26 as annual Clean-Up Day in Enterprise. All residents are urged to cooperate to the end that all trash and debris be removed from our alleys, streets and vacant lots.

Jack Goebel, Wallowa high school junior, won first place in the Elks lodge essay contest for schools of Union and Wallowa counties.

50 years ago

April 10, 1969

Attempts to retrieve a car from the Grande Ronde River below Troy failed when a line snapped as the car was being pulled across the river. Extremely murky water, flowing at an estimated 25 miles per hour hampered the efforts of divers.

A battle may be brewing at the Monday night meeting of the Joseph Chamber of Commerce, likely over the proposal to enlarge Chief Joseph Days by adding a variety show in the rodeo arena on Saturday night during CJD.

The Lady Elks bowling team was the winner of the Monday night bowling league. During their season they compiled a record of 73 wins and 39 losses. Members of the team are Dorothy Burritt, Marge McGraw, Jeanne Barnett, Helen Weaver and June Halverson.

The Economy Drug Co. was broken into some time Monday night and an undetermined amount of cash was taken as well as several bottles of amphetamines, a pep pill.

April 7, 1994

Ricky L. Carper, a native of Enterprise, will take over as commander of the U.S.S. Oliver Hazard Perry on April 25. A 1972 graduate of EHS, Carper is Wallowa County’s highest ranking military officer.

Jozie Hrenchir of EHS and Christal Prince of WHS notched standout performances at the Carnival of Speed track meet last Friday. Hrenchir took first place in the girls triple jump, and Prince, the defending Oregon Class 1A shot-put champion, also took a first place medal.

Wallowa County Judge Arleigh Isley this week verified an unofficial report that someone had shot a gun in the vicinity of his residence on Imnaha Highway last month. Four or five rounds were shot in the direction of his house from about 100 yards away and the shooter left in a vehicle.
