July 18, 1918

A large supply of yarn is now on hand for knitting Red Cross socks, and all women are urged to take some and resume work for this great cause.

The government continues to cruise the Wallowa county forests in search of pine timber suitable for airships. Trees found suitable are marked, so that there will be little delay should the government conclude to use this material.

Work on the construction of A. Hackbarth’s new building on Main Street, between the Enterprise State Bank and the J. C. Penney company store, has begun. The main part of the structure will be devoted to a theater.

70 YEARS AGO

July 15, 1948

The second Chief Joseph Days Queen dance was held at Wallowa with a large crowd in attendance. Voting for the queen candidates was very competitive. Wallowa’s candidate, Betty Jackson, moved into first place. Second is Mildred Hayes of Joseph, and Dolores Perren of Enterprise is third.

Purchasers of new Frazer cars from the Joseph Sales Co. are Arthur Bartmess from Lostine, Walter Maxwell of Enterprise and Earl Williams, Wallowa.

The old Ratcliff furniture store building on the corner east of the courthouse was torn down this week to make way for a new building. The building was believed to be one of the first store buildings in Enterprise, dating back to some time in the 1880s.

50 YEARS AGO

July 18, 1968

Burglars were thwarted in an attempt to remove a large amount of groceries and other supplies from the Gateway Market in Joseph when they were spotted by a boy passing by the store. The boy spotted the burglars about the time they spotted him and fled the scene on foot.

The largest crowd of golfers ever to take part in the Enterprise Elks annual golf tournament was on hand over the weekend to compete for the several trophies which were awarded. According to George Justice, chairman of the tournament, there were 89 golfers in the tournament representing 11 lodges in Oregon, Washington and Idaho.

Sid Britt of Lexington was judged the outstanding cowboy at an exciting and thrill-packed “rip snortin’” NRA rodeo in Enterprise over the weekend. The event was under the leadership of Dr. Fred Bornstedt, Jaycee president; Bud Rayburn, Chamber president; and area directors Vern Hays and LeRoy Graning.

July 15, 1993

Winners of last Friday’s Enterprise Chamber of Commerce Crazy Daze merchants’ costume breakfast, which attracted 30 entries, were Shirley and Ahren Donnigan of Amber Horse Antiques and Collectibles, most original, and Debbie Kowalski of Fairway Travel, craziest.

Shannon Vernam, 16, of Joseph became the first Wallowa County girl crowned queen of the Elgin Stampede in its 47-year history.

With an eye on the past, the Wallowa Band Nez Perce Descendants committee is making final preparations for its third-annual Friendship Feast and Pow Wow this weekend
