Jack was of the Apache Nation and had spent many years as a cowboy, in law enforcement and in the logging industry. The woman in the photo is not identified in the original cutline.

May 30, 1918

Every man in the United States who will be 21 years next Wednesday must register for military service on that day. Failure to register is punishable with a penalty of up to one year in jail.

The lambing and marking season has just closed at the Michellod sheep ranch on Lightning Creek and a remarkable record has been made. From a band of 3,507 ewes, 4,017 lambs were raised or an average of 112 percent.

W.C. Fitzpatrick, owner of the Royal Palm Café, has adopted a small English sparrow named Bob to inhabit the spacious dining hall. Bob has no fear of strangers and will come when called to get a small lump of sugar or some crumbs.

May 27, 1948

Liberty Grange Hall was the scene of a most enjoyable gathering last Sunday, the occasion being the Silver Jubilee banquet, commemorating the founding of Liberty Grange 25 years ago. Eighty-five people were present to enjoy the sumptuous banquet prepared by the H.E. Club and served by the youth group of the grange.

Complete returns from all of Wallowa County’s 14 precincts found the voting even heavier than had been predicted, with the total vote tabulating 2,153. Of this number, 1,025 were Republican and 1,125 Democratic.

A popularity contest for Wallowa County youngsters under six is being held in conjunction with the “Fun for You” show sponsored by the VFW. A large window displaying pictures of the contestants will be put in Homan’s Drug Store, and daily standings of contestants will be posted in the window.

50 YEARS AGO

May 30, 1968

Upsets and very tight tallies were the rule in Tuesday’s Oregon primary election. Among the very tight elections were the race for county commissioner and U.S. Senator, with Bill Degrofft winning for commissioner, Bob Packwood winning for Republican Senator and Wayne Morse winning for Democratic Senator.

A neighborhood feud started brewing last Friday in Enterprise when a family pet belonging to the Reid family was shot and killed. According to the investigation, the Reids’ dog and two others were chasing some chickens belonging to John Foster.

Following a request by the Oregon Cattlemen’s Association for emergency relief for the drought that has hit eastern Oregon, Gov. Tom McCall took steps late last week to aid this area of the state.

May 27, 1993

The 11th annual Wallowa Valley Festival of Arts will commence with a gala evening reception at the Joseph Community Center. Both adult and youth art shows will be open for viewing on Saturday and an outdoor stage will be set up at the grade school for local performers.

Beautiful quilts of all sizes, colors and patterns will fill the IOOF/Rebekah Hall in Joseph this weekend at the first quilt show hosted by the Wallowa Mountain Quilt Guild. Approximately 30 quilts have been entered for judging.

Wallowa High School plans to present diplomas to 20 members of the Class of 1992 in commencement exercises Thursday at the WHS gym. Speeches will be given by valedictorian Seth Jensen and salutatorian Lynn Jackson.
