Does anyone recognize this building? It was part of the Enterprise landscape at one point in its history. There were no hints on the back of the original.

100 YEARS AGO

May 23, 1918

Another opportunity to sell horses to the U.S. Army will be offered June 12-15 when Capt. F.S. von Stade of the quartermaster’s corps will be in the county for 40 animals. The specifications call for remounts of cavalry and artillery type, which will be bought direct from farmers at $135 a head.

All persons who like to sing are invited to attend the first rehearsal of the community chorus in the assembly hall of the schoolhouse. The singing will be under direction of a committee consisting of Dr. R.M. Roberts, Miss Amy Olmsted and Mrs. A.B. Conaway.

Prentiss Homan got 307 pounds of milk from 10 cows on May 7. For some time, he has been selling 10 to 11½ pounds of butterfat a day from the same cows.

70 YEARS AGO

May 20, 1948

A new sporting goods store will open in the quarters formerly occupied by Gayle’s Trading Post in the Vista Theater building. The store will be known as Fisk’s Outdoor Store and will be owned by Howard and Clyde Fisk, who have operated Fisk’s Outdoor Store in La Grande.

Thirty-seven seniors will receive their diplomas from Enterprise High presented by A.B. Stockdale, the chairman of the board, and the graduating talk will be made by Jay Hockett, a former teacher at EHS and a lifelong friend of all the graduates.

The largest number of voters going to the polls in a primary election in Wallowa County is expected tomorrow. The interest in the contest for the Republican nomination for president, competition for local offices and the hospital proposition have aroused more enthusiasm for the current primary elections than has generally been the case.

50 YEARS AGO

May 23, 1968

The new marina facilities at Wallowa Lake State Park are operating and ready for the busy summer season. About 420 feet of dock has been installed and has an aluminum decking. Restrooms and a small store are housed in the new building. Adjacent to the concessions building is a new parking area with capacity got more than 500 cars.

The Wallowa County Fair will be May 31 to June 1 at the Enterprise Fairgrounds. The public is invited to come and enjoy some of the finest stock in the county.

The National Commission on Safety Education announced this week that Bill Barnett, driver education instructor in Wallowa County, is one of 150 college and high school faculty members in 34 states and the Virgin Islands to be selected for a scholarship in advanced study programs to extend and improve driver and traffic safety education. Barnett will use his scholarship at Central Missouri State College in Warrensburg, Mo.

May 20, 1993

County voters overwhelmingly rejected the idea of establishing a national park within the county’s borders. The unofficial results of the mail-in measure election showed 3,044 voters (94.2 percent) rejecting the national park idea and 178 (5.5 percent) voting for it.

Graduating senior Melody Lesser received the 1993 Art Student of the Year award and the People’s Choice award for a pencil drawing of a musician at the Enterprise High School art show and awards program. The show featured hundreds of pieces of art produced by EHS art students under instructor Gary Wishart during the school year.

“Quilters,” a lively patchwork musical of pioneer life from the woman’s point of view, will be presented by the Wallowa Valley Players at the OK Theater. Directed by Louise Kienzle, this colorful musical patches together the story of a woman and her six daughters.
