Last week's photo featured Dean Irwin presenting a television to David and Arthur Caudle as part of a store-giveaway in the mid-50s.

100 YEARS AGO

May 9, 1918

A protest against the proposed advance in rates by the Home Independent Telephone Company was prepared by the Enterprise City Council. The company gave notice last week that it had asked the commission for permission to charge a higher rate. The increase contemplated is 25 cents a month on residence telephones.

Dr. Issa Tinimura, livestock commissioner of Japan, making an extensive survey of the sheep industry in the United States, was in Wallowa County last week. While here, Dr. Tinimura was taken to Imnaha by J.H. Dobbin to see the sheep there.

The new forest road between Enterprise and Flora will be built this summer. It had been feared that the war would delay the building of the road, as labor is short and money is being diverted to war uses, but all the money for the road was appropriated last year and forest officials believe they can gather enough workers.

70 YEARS AGO

May 6, 1948

Delores Perren was named this year’s valedictorian for Enterprise High School. Joan Ratcliff will be the class’s salutatorian.

The Wallowa County Junior Chamber of Commerce was awarded third place at the chamber’s state convention in Portland last week for the greatest number of miles traveled in the interest of junior chamber work. The local chamber chalked up 9,000 miles of travel in eight months.

The Enterprise chapter of the Future Farmers held a meeting last week to elect the new officers for 1948-1949. The newly elected officers are president, Dale Evans; vice president, Ken Warnock; secretary, Berton Bailey; treasurer, Duane Sandlin; reporter, Ronny Repplinger; and sentinel, Ken Stein.

50 YEARS AGO

May 9, 1968

Kay McFetridge and Bernie Stein, of Enterprise High School, have been selected as this year’s valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. Linda Victor and Bruce Wilson will be Wallowa High School’s valedictorian and salutatorian.

Presidential candidate Richard Nixon will be speaking in Pendleton next Wednesday at the Vert Memorial Coliseum.

All former residents and friends of the Promise area are invited to a camp-out and dancing on June 1 at the old Promise Grange Hall.

25 YEARS AGO

May 6, 1993

Volunteers are needed to participate in an archaeological excavation on the Pine Ranger District o the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. The project, part of the USDA Program “Passport in Time,” provides a chance for people of all backgrounds to become involved in exploring history. PIT volunteers will be involved in all phases of work from excavation, artifact processing and unit mapping to preliminary analysis.

“Imagining a Future: Community in the New West” is the theme for the sixth-annual Fishtrap Gathering this year. Among writers to explore this theme are Benjamin Saenz, Linda Hogan, Timothy Egan, J.T. Stewart, Jim Heynen and Mary Clearman Blew.

Windows on the Past Cultural Resource Celebration is a four-day event to be held at Cloverleaf Hall next week. The celebration will focus on the historic and prehistoric cultural resources of the National Forest, Wallowa County and the Pacific Northwest.
