Someone has just won a prize, but we don't know who, what the prize was or who was offering it. The sign says “Grand Prize for 4 p.m. Drawing.” The television is a mid- to late-50s model General Electric. Last week's photos of the three men in costume have been identified as Vernon “Beanie” Hays, Dean Irwin and Jidge Tippett. The event was likely in the old quonset hut that once stood where the chamber of commerce is today.

May 2, 1918

Patrons of the Enterprise Hotel have commented for some weeks on the excellent “war bread” served on the tables, many travelers pronouncing it the best of the kind they meet on the road. Chef Toy Sam Young is carrying his experiments further and expects in a very short time to produce an equally toothsome and wholesome loaf without a trace of wheat flour.

Pupils of Alder School surprised their teacher, Miss Osta Homan, by bringing their parents to the house on the last day and serving a splendid basket dinner.

On June 1, the subscription price of the Chieftain will be advanced to $2 a year.

70 YEARS AGO

Apr. 29, 1948

The South Fork Grange has adopted a resolution favoring the acceptance of an offer by S.L. Magill of $25,000 for a county hospital in Lostine, the offer of a hospital site on the highway north of Lostine by M. Crow and miscellaneous donations said to have been given by residents of Lostine and vicinity.

Radio technician Richard Wearne and his family have moved here from Bloomfield, Neb., to take over the shop operated by J.C. McLemore at the back of the quarters occupied by the Farm-Home and Commercial Electric Co.

The Pals girls’ athletic organization of Enterprise High School held initiation of new members. The initiates dressed in burlap sacks, men’s long underwear and miscellaneous apparel. Several stunts had to be performed on Main Street.

50 YEARS AGO

May 2, 1968

The Hells Canyon Dam has been completed. A ceremony in which top officials of Idaho and Oregon will take part, marks the official completion of the $230 million hydroelectric complex by investor-owned utility after two decades of national controversy and high-speed construction.

Registration for the primary election has closed with what is thought to be a record percentage of the county’s eligible voters registered. County clerk Marjorie Martin said that the total registration in the county is 3,273 with 1,276 Republicans, 1,983 Democrats, 8 Independents and 6 Non-Partisans. This leaves less than 200 eligible voters unregistered.

Prospects for an ample supply of water during the summer look rather marginal at this time. In Wallowa, water may be shut off to residents of the city when the daily maximum of 400,000 gallons is reached to allow farmers to irrigate.

50 fourth- through sixth-grade Enterprise students returned from a three-day trip to the Oregon Childrens Choir Festival in Eugene. With a total of 40 choirs performing, the Enterprise Special Choir was one of only four groups chosen to perform by themselves at the big evening concert. “The whole trip exceeded my wildest hopes,” said Enterprise Elementary music teacher Gail Swart.

The City of Joseph and Joseph Chamber of Commerce are planning the city’s annual spring clean-up for community beautification next week. Joseph High School students will assist city employees and volunteers in the removal of trash, yard debris, old furniture, appliances and so forth.

The Enterprise Junior High operetta, “Tumbleweed” (based on the comic strip), will be held at Enterprise School.
